Tragedy at La Guardia Raises Death Toll to 26

Teen would not serve prison time for double murder

A 15 year old Giles County girl convicted of murder in the June killings of Lee Hutchison and his wife Shirley Hutchison will not serve time in a state prison. Judge Patrick Graybeal ordered confinement with the Department of Youth and Family Services until her 21st birthday with possible early release. The girl, age 14 at the time, faces no public release of her name.

Government incursion alarms contractors in West Virginia

The West Virginia Utility Contractors Association warned of rising government involvement in private sector work. They cited a $4 million Bluefield Cumberland Road Industrial Park sewer line project and a South Putnam PSC project as examples. Association president Ron Spradling argued force account by government raises costs and reduces tax dollar value, favoring competitive bidding for on-time on-budget quality construction. David S. Taylor of Bluefield questioned cost savings claimed by government forces.

Charges Dismissed for Princeton Couple in Norris Tournament Case

Mercer County prosecutors seek reindictment after Circuit Judge Fra zier dismissed fraud indictments against Frank and Connie Arteese for allegedly using false pretenses to claim Chuck Norris would appear at a martial arts event last November. The judge ruled the charges failed to allege a crime, but prosecutors plan to present the case to the June grand jury amid ongoing investigation.

Gov. Gaston Caperton broke ground for the Mercer County Development Authority’s new shell building at Cumberland Industrial Park. Caperton hails Bluefield shell building project as partnership

Governor Gaston Caperton praised a $1.2 million shell building in the Cumberland Industrial Park Mercer County as a model of public private cooperation. Officials noted funding from the Commerce Department EDA grant, Hugh I Shott Foundation, timber sale proceeds and local bank loans. Weather halted earthwork but project moves forward with contractor Compton Construction and engineers Stafford Consultants.

Caperton sees brighter days for West Virginia

Governor Gaston Caperton told the Bluefield Kiwanis Club that West Virginia is emerging from years of debt and decline. He noted a $1 billion statewide road program, 38,000 more jobs since 1980, and a new Mercer County high school as part of education gains. He presented a $250,000 Cabinet on Children and Families grant to the Mercer County Family Connection and dedicated a shell building at Cumberland Industrial Park while visiting seniors in Bluefield.
