Tug River Health Clinic Maintains Services Despite Budget Strain
The Tug River Health Association serving Gary and Northfork in McDowell County says ongoing administrative changes and financial challenges will not cut programs. New executive director Tim Crofton brings 40 years of experience as funding remains pledged by federal and state agencies. The clinics will serve all patients with or without insurance, continuing CHIP, Black Lung, Maternal and Infant Health, and Minority Health programs along with education efforts.

Teens in Cars Heighten Crash Risk, New Study Finds
Johns Hopkins researchers analyzed federal data from 1992 to 1997 and found 16 year olds with one passenger are 39 percent more likely to be killed, rising to 86 percent with two passengers and 182 percent with three or more. For 17 year olds the increases reach 48, 158, and 207 percent respectively. The risk spikes at night, and passenger presence in teens’ cars raises danger for others as well. The study supports stronger teen driving curfews and passenger limits across states.
