Soft coal operators and miners fail to reach a contract agreement with time running out. Soviet forces report the collapse of the German bridgehead on the east bank of the Oder near Stettin and capture Altdamm as Braunsberg falls and Heiligenbeil nears. They also close the East Prussian pocket from both ends, describe gains along the pocket, and claim big German losses. Moscow censors a second offensive in Hungary and Silesia toward Austria with 200000 troops in action.
Louise Bowling eighteen, one of seven Bowlin g family members injured in a Monday night crash on the Princeton Oakvale road, died at Memorial Hospital Princeton at midnight. Father C B Bowling and daughter Mildred twenty were listed in critical condition with serious injuries. Louise suffered a base of skull fracture and facial lacerations. C B Bowling had a broken back along with head injuries. The four other relatives were reported improving. The driver of the rear hitting car, Thomas William Swim of Princeton, is held in Mercer county jail. Funeral plans tentative for Matoaka services Thursday. Louise was born in Hiawatha West Virginia and attended Matoaka High School.
More than 1700 U S troops arrived at the Hampton Roads port of embarkation from the western front aboard a troop transport. The ship carried 725 wounded and sick and 1000 rotation troops offered 30 days leave before domestic duty. Passengers represented all 48 states and were moved to Camp Patrick Henry evacuation hospital for treatment and later transfer.
Richmond March 20 The Virginia general assembly advanced a large school improvement program proposed by Governor Darden. A joint public hearing was scheduled for 3 p m on bills funding a 4 783 990 program for public schools while other measures sought to study school consolidation and pupil transport. The senate and house planned further hearings on veterans benefits poll tax repeal and suffrage law studies. The house approved funding for retirement pay increases for retired teachers and for a girls dormitory at the University of Virginia School of Education. Senator Norris was elected president pro tem and Senator Battle named chair of the finance committee.
Washington records reveal the War Manpower Commission national labor-management committee accuses the New Bedford labor diversion program of being used to lobby for compulsory service. The panel blames officials in Washington and calls on WMC head McNutt to revoke the forced release order and restart with a fresh approach.
Allied forces led by Maj. Gen. Rapp Brush's 40th Division seized the Iloilo airfield on Panay Island and pushed toward Manila. Another column moved north from the beachhead, taking Janiuay Pototan and Barotac Nuevo while linking with guerrilla forces. The advance followed Doilo’s defense as MacArthur noted enemy disarray.

London reports the Archbishop of York calls for immediate execution of Hitler Himmler and their circle. War crimes commission notes captured Nazis will face trial while allied armies are instructed not to shoot criminals on capture. Major criminals deemed murderers and torturers by the commission.
Washington witnesses testified that two agriculture department sub-officials had criminal records as a bill to appropriate 833,801,932 for the CCC faced opposition. Edmund G. Benser and Ralph W. Olmstead were named amid hearings listing past records, dismissals, and unresolved cases. The CCC reported spoilage and losses in food purchases, including significant egg and potato misdirections.
The 45,000-ton aircraft carrier Midway was christened at Newport News Shipbuilding in ceremonies led by Artemus Gates. Gates praised the ship as a two fisted fighter with improved armor and damage control.
