Bishop Miner Foot Amputation After Mine Injury

Pioneer farmer William Nesley Mathena celebrated his eighty first birthday Friday March 19 at his son Walter Mathena’s home in Tip Top. Born 1862 at The Divides Tazewell county near Witten's Mills, he lived in Tip Top fifty years in the same house. Married July 6 1881 to Martha Carter eleven children born seven daughters four sons nine survive. Wife died about six years ago. Former Radford Brick Company employee for fourteen years, later Higby Lumber and three years operated a locomotive hauling lumber from Abbs Valley to Tip Top for Norfolk and Western railway shipment. He retired to a small farm. He has two sons and sixteen grandsons registered for the armed services. seven grandsons serve overseas and three others are training in the United States.
