Federal Conciliation Director 8. Ching asked coal operators and John L. Lewis to meet Monday to end the mine shutdown. He said he will explore every means to settle pension demand disputes and resume coal mining.
Roanoke Virginia March 19 The Powhatan Arrows between Norfolk and Cincinnati and 15 other Norfolk and Western passenger trains will be cut off Sunday at midnight under coal conservation orders. About 800 shop workers are laid off, with 100 at Shaffers Crossing Roanoke. Train crews face losses as coal train operations dwindle, and the list includes Nos 25 26 11 12 161 163 164 35 36 103 104. Virginian Railway says its passenger trains won t be affected much.
Huntington March 19 ex Legion leader Paul H Griffith told 300 Legionnaires that he proposed to President Truman and General Lucius Clay dropping atom bombs on the Russians by mistake to show power. He warned Congress to approve the Marshall Plan and selective service or risk a shooting war, saying only a big stick can stop Russia.
A ground search party found the wreckage of a missing plane in the mountains north of Payson Arizona with the pilot Robert A. Toth 29 of Durango Colorado still in the cockpit. The wreck is the same one from which Larry H. Koshak 29 of Durango wandered eight days earlier to a lumber camp after the crash occurred March 9.
Vlade Clementis succeeds the late Jan Masaryk as foreign minister of Czechoslovakia. Clementis, 46, was deputy FM under Masaryk who died nine days earlier, officially ruling his death a suicide by plunging from a apartment window in the foreign ministry palace.
