Bloody Mountain Feud Ends with Fatal Skull Fracture

The Bluefield report describes a violent conflict near Oakvale over a mountain woman Jennie Hale known as Jennie Williams. Frank Atwood is alleged to have killed Bill Melvin with an axe after a struggle, struck by shotgun and pistol fire, leaving Atwood with a fractured skull and Melvin wounded but not fatally.

Fatal Explosion Kills Gravely and Injures Houston

Two workers from S. Walton & Co. were killed or injured in an early morning blast on the grade between Coopers and East End tunnel. Winston Gravely died instantly after the explosion while Tinker Houston sustained severe head and facial injuries and is not expected to survive. Gravely’s body was sent to Martinsville, Virginia, via No. 12.

Huntington Chosen for June 19 Republican Convention

J H Jennings a colored worker at Coopers died Saturday from a wound caused two days earlier during a quarrel with Ben Payne, also colored. Payne fired after confrontation at the door, striking Jennings in the windpipe. Payne fled, a pursuit followed, and he remained at large as Jennings was buried Saturday afternoon.
