The commission stands firm on pursuing charges against J. M. Andrew and related gas operations. Under Elkins Act permission was required before railroads could charge higher rates for short hauls compared with long hauls on the same route, prompting continued legal action.
Bluefield Shippers' Association members led by J. W. Ruff C. O. Wright withdrew from the case against Norfolk and Western and other lines. The hearing, postponed to tomorrow, continues with Judge Harold A. Ritz and others pursuing the action under Elkins law over short haul versus long haul rates and related petitions.
Washington March 8 The house ways and means committee debates tariff procedure and committee selections for the next congress. Chairman Unterwood says current work by Democrats is tentative and likely to stay private for about ten days. The discussions cover detailed procedural matters and staffing.
Colorado D A R meeting in Pueblo spans two days with a large gathering of distinguished women. The annual conference marks the society’s first convention held outside Denver, highlighting the event in the city on March 8.
Thirty debarred Macedonians arrived February 24 on the Frankfort from Bremen and were sent to Baltimore to board the Maine for return to Bremen. They had come to work at Indianapolis slaughter houses but Immigration Commissioner Rodgers found the labor market crowded and feared the immigrants might become public charges.
Walter Lowrie Fisher has been appointed secretary of the interior to succeed Richard A. Ballinger. Fisher is a West Virginian born in Wheeling in 1862 to Daniel W. and Amanda Kouitz Fisher. He was educated in Wheeling public schools and at Marietta College, graduating before beginning law studies in Chicago in 1884.
Jefferson City Mo March 8 The supreme court today affirmed the twenty five year sentence of James Sharp also known as Adam God in a case involving lengthy prison time and a disputed identification or charge.
Walter Dipley and Goldie Smith were denied habeas corpus release and must stay at the penitentiary since they cannot post bond. The pair were sentenced for the murder of boxing star Stanley Ketchel in Kansas City.
President Taft communicates through Fred M. Dearing to President Diaz, seeking to reassure that U S military maneuvers in Texas and nearby areas have no hostile intent toward Mexico. Diaz replies via Creel and the American embassy, acknowledging the clarification. Papers note calm among observers with mixed interpretations of Taft’s order.

The jury in Beatrice Anita Baldwin Turnbulls bid for a one sixth share of the eleven million dollar Baldwin estate returned a verdict against the claimant under court instructions. After eight days of argument on a motion to direct a verdict, the judge announced the decision ending the young Boston girls bid.

In hearings before the interstate commerce commission President Johnson of the Norfolk and Western Railroad testified that at one time the Pennsylvania Railroad and allied interests nearly controlled the Norfolk and Western stock, but control was averted and never held. He denied that coal rate increases to the lakes were caused by any railroad other than the Norfolk and Western.
