Lewis plan for labor peace spurned by AFL leaders
Washington March 7 AP A sweeping proposal by John L Lewis to unite CIO AFL and railroad unions into a single American Congress of Labor was rejected by AFL peace negotiators. The plan would create an eight million member body and arrange conventions April 15 to 30 with a June 1 meeting in Washington. The AFL CIO and four railroad brotherhoods would share an executive board, with Green Morrison kept in current salaries and Lewis remaining a non salary CIO head. The AFL peace committee said the proposal was not a serious basis for settlement and urged realistic negotiations at the labor department meetings tomorrow. Tobin of the Teamsters was slated to rejoin the AFL negotiating committee after the White House conference.
