The report describes a strong Japanese center engagement near Tai-Ling as Oku and Nodza are targeted. Russian rear defences are said to be defenceless, enabling scouts Karoki and Nogi to extend the Japanese army’s right and left wings near the Mukden-Tai-Ling railway, threatening supply lines.
Abel Massey councilman and contractor lies gravely injured at home after an unprovoked assault by G C Moore ostler at Norfolk and Western shops. Moore in jail pending outcome as Massey’s condition worsens with severe head wounds and persistent vomiting speculated to threaten death.
Tokio reports noon dispatch that Russians retreat from Mukden and Fushun toward Tieling. Kuropatkin focuses on protecting Fushun to keep a retreat line open. New Chwang arrivals say Russians burn government buildings at Mukden before fleeing. A thousand Russians on the Liao River east bank attack the Japanese rear but are repulsed. Japanese fully occupy Sinmingtiog as heavy fighting continues along the Liao.
Assassins fired three shots at M. Marchas eon and M. Manutens, directors of Email factory in Warsaw. The attack had no effect and the attackers were arrested.
Thirty thousand Japanese troops reportedly gained an entrenched position five miles west of the gates of Mukden after a night of hand to hand combat near New Chwang.
The battle around Mukden was renewed at daybreak as artillery fire grew heavy, with forces engaged in renewed combat around the city.
New York March 7. The strike stands firm with no side conceding. H B May warns that a strike action could pull engineers and firemen from the subway power house, risking a total shutdown of elevated and subway lines. A serious rush hour accident then occurred at Twenty third Street when a green motorman ignored signals and crashed into a standing train, injuring fourteen passengers. Police reserves barred civilians from the scene.
Washington lists Edward W. Sturdevant Jr from Pennsylvania and one West Virginian among those qualifying for second lieutenants in the U S Marine Corps after last month’s examination. The roster includes candidates from multiple states such as Virginia New York Indiana and Kansas.
A report from St. Petersburg says the Russian center has fallen and Japan captured thirteen heavy siege guns at Mokden. If true, the battle is a disaster for Kuropatkin and prompts calls for his recall amid fires and many bodies left in the ruins.
Washington, March 7. After the inauguration parade Roosevelt entertained Rough Riders at luncheon in the executive mansion the former regiment officers. For over an hour he recalled camp life marches bivouacs and the fighting in Cuba with Col Brodie Major Llewellyn Capt McClintock and others. The gathering marked one of the happiest moments of the inauguration period.

Justice Ford of the supreme court this afternoon received the grand jury in New Brunswick New Jersey. Indictments include two against Rev J F Cordova for abandonment and for assault and battery. The assault charge says Cordova wilfully hurled a plate dish glass and tin pan at Mrs Cordova and broke the door panel bruising her shoulder. Arraignment for plea set for 10 o clock tomorrow morning per Cordova attorney Cook.
Jefferson City Mo March 7 There were eight desertions from the caucus nominee in the vote for United States senator today bringing total Republican defections to thirty since Niedringhaas was chosen to succeed Cockrell. Two ballots showed identical results Niedringhaus 57 Cockrell 78 Kerena 10 Dyer 1 McKinley 5 Bartholdt 5 Warner 2 Lewis 1 Necessary to a choir 84.
Francis Montgomery Offutt aged sixty five former lumber operator merchant and railroad contractor died yesterday in Cumberland He previously managed the Cumberland Building Company and was secretary of the Hamfrid Land and Improvement Company He is survived by his widow and four children He had one of the state’s finest collections of Indian relics and old coins
The President forwarded nominations to the Senate including Charles Y. Treat for treasurer of the U S from New York Alston G. Dayton for federal judge in the northern district of West Virginia and Charles W. Anderson the internal revenue collector in New York.
A Central News dispatch from St. Petersburg reports that martial law has been officially declared in Baku. Come to Tazewell March 14 for a big horse and mule sale.

Roland G. Luther a noted anthracite engineer and treasurer of Peerless Coal and Coke Company died at his Pottsville home after apoplexy. His death closes Peerless operations at Vivian until funeral, with widespread effects across Forties district and 44 Reading collieries observing the funeral day.
