The Republican contest widens as David Duke debuts on the South Carolina ballot and eyes seven Super Tuesday states while analysts say Patrick Buchanan has siphoned Duke’s thunder. Bush remains the standard bearer as campaigns clash over the path to the nomination.
The Bluefield Virginia Rescue Squad hosts its annual pancake breakfast at the squad building from 6 a.m. to noon. Tickets cost 2.50 dollars for adults and 1.25 dollars for children. Proceeds fund equipment, supplies, and building maintenance. More calendar details are on page A-2.

David Williams, one of three inmates who tunneled from the West Virginia Penitentiary, was captured on the West Virginia Turnpike after forcing a couple to make breakfast and stealing their car. He surrendered without resistance in the stolen vehicle, three hours after the New Martinsville home intrusion. fellow escapees remain at large or were recaptured.
West Virginia legislators face opposition from several gubernatorial candidates over a proposed pay raise for top officials. Sen. Charlotte Pritt and Attorney General Mario Palumbo decry the raise as insulting amid state cuts. Republican foes accuse leaders of insiders’ interests while Gov Caperton suggests donating any raise to charity.
Nearly 250 student singers from 31 schools gather at Tazewell High School for the Junior All-District Mixed Chorus and Workshop Chorus. The event, sponsored by District VII Virginia Choral Directors Association, features directors from Tazewell, Richlands, Graham and Woodbridge with Diane Thomas on piano.
