Virginia death row bill advances with 45 day limit
A Virginia Senate committee endorsed a bill to extend the death row deadline for new innocence evidence from 21 days to 45 days, sending it to the Senate floor. Del. James Almand’s three year proposal was rejected, with lawmakers favoring a modest change. Sen. Kenneth Stolle backed the compromise amid cautious optimism.

Court rules in favor for disabled workers benefits case
The West Virginia Supreme Court orders the Workers' Compensation Fund to rely on the most favorable medical evidence when doctors disagree. The ruling supports George W. Thacker, a Huntington machine operator with 26 years at Steel of West Virginia, by awarding pneumoconiosis benefits after prior 15 percent impairment was overturned. Justice Starcher faults judges and board for ignoring the law and stresses reliability and claimant-favored evidence.
