Joseph and Andrew Zappa, ages 3 and 5, will receive St Paul mayoral commendations after Joseph called 911 when their mother Susan Zappa suffered a life threatening diabetic seizure. Andrew helped by relaying that sugar was needed. Their quick action aided emergency responders.
From today through April 26 Bluefield State College hosts language workshops in Ara bic Chinese Japanese German Italian Russian and Sanskrit with registration at Conley Hall room 309. Tazewell County redistricting committee aims to have new voting lines ready for U S Justice Department approval by mid April. The 15 member panel plans to hire Anderson and Associates of Blacksburg to map current precincts using census data and block level counts.
Public hearing on the proposed City Board tax incentive drew few speakers with no opposition. The plan waives B and O taxes for the first year and phases in reductions over four years for new or expanding businesses in Bluefield’s historic downtown district and future annexed areas. Mayor Cole cited economic need and support from Main Street Bluefield and the Chamber.
The Senate unanimously passed a bill to empower the Health Care Cost Review Authority to regulate hospital rates, sending the measure back to the House. The Caperton administration plan to protect underground drinking water also advanced, with Craige predicting House agreement on changes.
