National and state officials, including a congressional delegation and a governor's representative, attend the funeral of Hughes. The body is accompanied to Spring Hill Cemetery from Marion, Ohio where the death occurred.
Rep James A Hughes of West Virginia was buried in Huntington after state funeral services in the city auditorium attended by numerous state and national officials. A guard of honor accompanied the body to Spring Hill cemetery for interment following services conducted by three ministers.
Auburn New York March 5 Edward L Beckwith the principal keeper at Auburn prison was stabbed to death by inmate Anthony Mortelito 31 in view of 45 guards and 875 prisoners Beckwith known as firm but fair fought back and was fatally wounded Mortelito was subdued and later sentenced for murder in 1922 He was an Italian native awaiting deportation after his parole in 1937 as investigators link the act to recent prison disturbances
Dave Gideon of the Huntington Herald Dispatch asks James B. Clendenin to rally fourth district voters to back Mrs James A. Hughes as successor to the late Representative Hughes. He seeks a tacit Republican Democratic agreement to avoid a special election saving about 150 000 dollars, and asks Longworth if the House will accept a nominee by party agreement.
Judge Richard W. Martin of the common pleas court and former Pennsylvania public service commissioner died in Pittsburgh at age 47 after a two week pneumonia illness. He had recently run for the Republican mayoral nomination in the September primary but was defeated.
Paris reports 100 to 150 deaths from floods across southern and central France with Montauban and Moissac hardest hit. Officials fear undercounting as ruins are cleared, while vast property losses approach 40 million dollars and vineyards face ruin from slime but major rivers recede.
Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh flew his Bowlus sailplane named Anne Lindbergh for about two miles along the Monterey shoreline. The flight kept the craft aloft for six minutes over the Pacific coast.
Mexico City, March 5 Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr. used a small black jack for defense and tapped the chauffeur on the head to stop the car after the driver refused orders to go to the hotel. The chauffeur called a policeman who escorted Vanderbilt to his hotel. the driver denied intent to harm.
Washington March 5 The Senate voted 47 to 39 to raise the Cuban sugar tariff from 1.76 to 2 cents a pound. A House bill set 2.40 cents. conferees must choose between 2 and 2.40. Debate featured charges of vote trading as Howell proposed a direct federal bounty of 0.441 cents per pound.
The bodies of Morey Johnson Eugene Lavoie and Milton Hogge were found with the small biplane wreckage on Will Rogers ranch in the Santa Monica mountains after a heavy rainstorm. Johnson piloted from the rear and is believed to have struck a hill while attempting to land or skim clouds.
The Rhode Island House of Representatives passed in concurrence a bill to submit to voters on the November ballot the question whether the eighteenth amendment to the U S Constitution should be retained. The measure passed by nearly all members and now goes to the Republican governor for signature after Senate approval last week.
Geneva March 5 The international tariff truce conference in its third week nears conclusion with no definite progress toward a truce announced.
Police in cities worldwide prepared to quell possible disturbances after the Moscow call for demonstrations. New York and Philadelphia would allow orderly meetings while Chicago banned parades. Authorities also warned of armed paraders and cited actions in Berlin Paris Prague and other cities.
Pittsburgh officials say a permit will be granted for the Trade Union Unity League demonstration of unemployed workers tomorrow if staged along a designated route and in compliance with ordinances. Police warn no permit without application. John Kasper threatens self defense if police club employed and unemployed participants.
In Athens on March 5, Communist agents distributed proclamations calling workers to assemble at the town hall tomorrow morning. They urged higher wages and the creation of disturbances to establish a labor government.
Charles E. Denney, president of the Erie Railroad, announced a $10,000,000 expenditure program for improvements and new equipment this year as proof of optimism for the railroad outlook in 1930. He spoke at a Traffic Club dinner in Pittsburgh and supported reasonable consolidation when asked about the Interstate Commerce Commission merger plan with Van Sweringen lines including the Chesapeake & Ohio and Nickel Plate.
Paris reports Andre Tardieu's second cabinet secured a 316 to 263 victory in a test ballot despite leftist opposition. The margin surprised pundits as ministers prepared to return to London for the naval conference and to discuss the Young Plan, taxes, and the budget. The delegation includes Tardieu Briand Pietri De Fleuriau and Kerguezec.
Trials of Irene Schroeder and W Glenn Dague for the slaying of Corporal Brady Paul will be held in Lawrence County Courthouse courtroom No 1 with space limited to about fifty spectators. Jurors will have identification cards for admission and alibi defenses are planned by defense attorney Kedgwin Powell.
Fourteen bids for the third capitol unit were opened with George A Fuller Co of New York the low bidder at 3 236 000 dollars on the construction work. The commission adjourned after initial bids and will reconvene to review 37 electrical and related bids. Governor Conley led the session as chair. The second low was J Henry Miller Co Baltimore 3 287 000 dollars and the third low Struck Construction Co Louisville 3 344 000 dollars.
Senate leaders promise quick movement on unemployment legislation after talks with Secretary Davis. Davis backs tariff passage and a $230 million public buildings bill, and backs a nationwide employment agency program steered by Senator Wagner. He cites 3 million unemployed and seeks coordinated federal state action with rail and road funding in play.
Phillip P. Campbell former Kansas representative and current Standard Oil attorney testified before the Senate lobby committee that he had no instructions from Standard Oil regarding the proposed oil tariff. He said a letter alleging he was a lobbyist was misinterpreted and tied to Sproul’s Senate race.
Hinton West Virginia March 5 William Fox 30 was shot and killed during a raid on a moonshine still in Brooks hollow. A coroner's jury ruled he died from bullets fired by state policeman T F Yost or Hinton officer J A Simmons who joined Summers county sheriff and state policeman F O Poston at the raid. Arch Givene says Fox was unarmed. The raiding officers had a felony warrant.
Mrs Pearl Demaret stenographer to Secretary of State Stimson dies in St George's Hospital after falling from a sixth floor window at the Mayfair hotel. Mrs Hurley Fisk of the division of current information was in the bathroom. investigators call the fall accidental noting she clutched the window sill attempting to escape.
Colonel Henry L. Stimson, head of the American delegation, says navies could trim U S and British totals by more than 200000 tons each at the London naval conference. He notes progress is uneven amid French political turmoil and returns to Stanmore after speaking.
