Reagan steps up contra campaign

President Reagan urged Congress to approve about 100 million dollars in military and humanitarian aid to Contra rebels in Nicaragua. He warned that Sandinista victory could invite Soviet bases on the mainland, threaten the Panama Canal, and trigger a mass refugee exodus. Shultz echoed the warning as UNO leaders stood with Reagan in the Cabinet Room.

Panel urges drug tests for workers and wider anti-drug drive

A presidential panel on organized crime calls drug trafficking the nation's top crime issue and urges workplace drug testing and strong military efforts. It says enforcement can only hold the line while demand reduction programs and broader policing must expand to curb an estimated 110 billion dollars in narcotics sales annually. Judge Irving R. Flag ceremony honors teachers at Princeton courthouse

Mercer County school officials proclaimed National Teacher Day during a flag raising at the courthouse in Princeton. JROTC members Craig Oxes and Melissa Cabbell raised the Flag of Learning and Liberty to fly beside Old Glory as a sparse crowd braved cold weather. The ceremony also paid homage to Christa McAuliffe aboard the Challenger.

University of Charleston wins playoff opener 97 91

The regular-season WVIAC champions Inside University of Charleston edged West Virginia Tech 97 to 91 Monday in Montgomery to lead the NAIA District 28 best of three playoff. Tech had won 91 81 Saturday to force the playoff after defeating the Golden Eagles.

Welch to end fire service outside city limits

About 50 residents from Capels Hemphill Coalwood questioned Welch officials after the city council voted to suspend fire service outside city limits effective April 1. Mayor Wilson said service could resume if homeowners obtain contracts with the city and pay fees based on home assessed value.

Trial begins in fighter's death in Mercer County

The Mercer County Circuit Court hears a $5.1 million lawsuit filed by Michael A. Pitzer's parents against the Princeton Boxing Club and other officials. They allege negligence linked to the 17 year old boxer's death after a 1983 Golden Gloves event in Montgomery. The six member all male jury was empaneled to run about two weeks.

Y Center trustees seek power to close building

Y Center trustees met to address insurance and security if a utilities shutdown forces closure. Acting chairman Judge William Bivens said the board lacks authority to close the building, while seven trustees offered no clear answer on who can order closure. Bluefield attorney and trustee John Shott suggested the YM-YWCA executive committee likely has authority but the issue remains unsettled.
