Congress approved a compromise measure boosting congressional salaries from 15000 to 22500 a year and raised pay for federal judges and prosecutors. The bill passed 223 to 113 and now goes to President Eisenhower for signature.
The National Coal Assn states the coal industry stands united against planned increases in railroad coal rates. A public hearing by Eastern Western and Midwestern railroad groups is set for Chicago March 10 to consider rate revisions. The association urges maintaining or reducing rates to help coal compete with other fuels.
Meteorologist Leroy Stone of the Huntington Weather Bureau says the worst of the flood is over in southern and southwestern West Virginia as the rivers recede. Logan and Mingo counties faced road closures, school suspensions, and dozens relocated in bottomslands, with damage including a fire at Logan’s West Virginia Supermarket and flooding in Williamson and Fort Gay.
National City Bank of New York announces plans to acquire First National Bank of New York for 165 million dollars and merge under the name First National City Bank. The deal values First National shares at 5 percent cash or stock with 300,000 outstanding shares. The combined bank would be the largest in the U S with deposits surpassing 8.27 billion.
Air Force permits five reporters to ride in a B25 during the third 1955 atomic test at Yucca Flat. The dawn 300 foot tower shot lit the sky across six states as cloud edges were scanned for safe radiation levels.
The Bulgarian presidium unanimously passed a decree to terminate the state of war with Germany. The decision was broadcast by Radio Sofia. Russia Poland and Czechoslovakia have already ended their state of war with Germany.
Vatican officials say Pope Pius XII will turn 79 the following day with no public celebration. For the third year running the pope is convalescing from illness and no formal events are planned in St Peter's Square or elsewhere.
Arabs stone U N Truce Commission officers in Gaza and set a U N jeep on fire causing dispersed rioting. Reports say 38 Egyptians were killed and 33 wounded as tensions with Israel rose to a peak since 1948. The fighting prompted protests from Egypt and Israel and highlighted amid armistice row.
Capt. R. T. Shepherd, age 56, a leading British airplane pilot, died today in Nuthall England. The obituary notes his prominence in British aviation and marks his death as a significant loss to the industry.
London March 1 Prime Minister Churchill told the House of Commons that Soviet leaders know they cannot force a hydrogen bomb war against the United States which holds the power to strike today. He predicted Russia will need two to four years more to deliver a H bomb against North America and Britain. He said Moscow lacks current power to devastate the West and warned a future holocaust could destroy civilization even as a paradox suggests war risk may lessen with weapon buildup.
A disabled six engine stratojet crashed into a trailer park near Lake Charles killing five, including three crewmen and a young couple. Air Force officials said the crippled jet aimed away from residences while attempting to land at Lake Charles Air Force Base.
Senators Byrd and George joined Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee to defeat the $20 per person income tax cut by a 9-6 vote. President Eisenhower had opposed the measure, while the House previously approved a $20 cut 210-205. If the panel’s ruling stands, a floor fight looms, with motion leaders including Clements and Barkley proposing staged implementation.
In Phoenix on March 1 a veterinarian, his wife and their four children were found shot to death in the family home. Authorities believe the couple argued frequently and that the children may have been killed outside before the father shot his wife and died by suicide, with a .38 pistol found near his body. The five victims were Catherine Moffat, 31, and children Wayne 11 Vickie Lynn 8 Candice 7 Gregory B. The killings were discovered by Mrs. Nugent, sister of Mrs. Moffat, who went to the house after no answer to a telephone call.
East Berlin police wounded a West Berlin pedestrian as they tried to stop a drag wagon driver fleeing toward the West. The incident occurred tonight as authorities attempted to prevent the escapee from escaping across the border.
United States demands release of 41 American civilians held by China behind the bamboo curtain. Geneva talks yielded 18 frees since June, with two Air Force and two Army civilians among those detained, while further exits were denied.
The House of Delegates defeated the Income Tax bill 52 to 45 after a spirited one hour and twenty minute debate in Charleston. Delegates then rejected a motion to reconsider by 53 to 44, reflecting anti-administration sentiment.
Six of the nation s top Communists were released from federal prisons amid plans for renewed prosecution or deportation under Operation Re-Trap. The men, part of an 11 member 1949 trial, completed five year terms with reduced time for overthrow of the U S government. Some were freed on bonds. others remained in custody or faced further legal action, with potential extra prison time if convicted again.
