Flu drug amantadine speeds recovery in severe brain injuries
A large federally funded study in the United States Denmark and Germany shows amantadine accelerates recovery in severely brain injured patients. After four weeks those treated with the drug regained more reliable yes and no answers followed commands and used everyday tools faster than a control group. Fewer patients remained vegetative and side effects were similar between groups. The long term outcome remains unknown but the drug offers hope for faster recovery and broader testing.
