Gov. Mark Warner criticized both chambers for trimming funds tied to economic development and terrorism preparedness. He argued the discretionary Development Opportunity Fund helps attract major employers and create jobs, noting about 1,000 positions already returned in his first 47 days. Senate and House plans reduce terrorism grants and funding for emergency services and museum aid.

Supreme Court won't hear Fayette County School Board case

State Supreme Court voted 4-0 to deny review of a bid to block Circuit Judge John Hatcher's ruling barring Fayette County School Board members Lawrence Boley and Leon Newman from serving. The ruling stemmed from simultaneous service on a public service district board, prompting a Feb. 5 restraining order that reduced the board to three. The case touches past votes on school consolidation and superintendent actions, with ongoing staffing changes including a $140,000 settlement and resignations among Arthur, Pilato, and Wright as a new superintendent search proceeds.
