Grand jury weighs probe into Marion County prosecutor
FAIRMONT AP The attorney general appointed to probe charges that Marion County prosecutor Monty Brown used restitution funds for personal trips and offered cocaine to staff said a grand jury may hear the case. The investigation, prompted by accusations from Marion County Judge Rodney Merrifield, has interviewed about 40 witnesses and reviewed thousands of documents. Brown contends the judge seeks to embarrass him as he plans to oppose Merrifield in the 1992 circuit judge race. The probe has looked into missing funds flagged by a state tax audit, with Brown estimating the misappropriated amount at about $3,000 versus the audit’s $12,000.
