Yen Surpluses Persist Despite Stronger Japanese Currency
The yen’s rise against the dollar and Japan’s trade surpluses continue, defying standard economic theory. Economists like Hiroya Ichikawa cite ongoing U.S. inflation, cheap raw materials, and efficiency gains as factors keeping exports competitive despite yen gains. The dollar-yen rate shifted from 290 to 205.475, with Japan’s imports largely raw materials priced in dollars.

Industry and labor leaders warned that rising imports of textiles, apparel, and fiber from the Far East threaten thousands of U.S. jobs. They urged the government to keep import fees on textiles, seek tariff-exemption for materials, renegotiate trade pacts with Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea, and consider global quotas to limit surged shipments.
