A New York man urges changes to liquor laws arguing for stronger controls amid the prohibition debate. He says reform is needed to solve the ongoing liquor question and positions himself as a leading voice in the public discussion.
Governor Alfred E. Smith accepted the Democratic nomination and published a lengthy telegram outlining his stance on prohibition and constitutional enforcement. He congratulated Senator Robinson on the vice presidential nomination and pledged to lead his party to victory in November. Rain delayed Albany parade but the demonstration proceeded rain or shine.
The telegram from Governor Smith to the Democratic convention expresses gratitude for the nomination and pledges single minded devotion to the United States and its people. Judge Archie Buchanan will decide on July 17 whether Caudill Dennis, age 11, should be moved after a Giles county circuit court jury found him guilty of second degree murder in the May 16 slaying of 15 year old Otey Lafon at Newport. Defense argued verdict was unlawful and evidence insufficient, citing the boy’s youth.
J W Lester, 56, known as Big John, was struck and killed by a Norfolk and Western freight train near W Va his home in Sandy River Mc Dowell county. He stepped from behind a truck onto the tracks and died about 2 30 pm. He left a widow and several children and was a well known figure in the district. The body was turned to Jaeger undertakers for burial preparations.
Mexico City reports that W. E. Mitchell, one of two American captives abducted near Guadalajara on June 26, has escaped. Hooper remains held for a $1,500 ransom while U S embassy has not received confirmation on the escape from any source.
Heavy rains in Southern West Virginia caused extensive flooding in Logan and Huntington areas. A 6 year old boy, Joe Nathan Irving, drowned when his grandmother Mary Woods and others were rescued after their house collapsed into Buffalo Creek. Roads and railroad property suffered damage and washouts halted traffic while nearby towns reported flooded streets and creeks. The Ohio River rose toward flood stage as engineers warned of continuing high water.
Heavy rainfall floods cellars in residential districts of Charleston West Virginia turning intersections into lakes. Automobile traffic halts as sewers prove inadequate to drain the water. Local authorities assess drainage fixes as streets resemble coastal basins.
In Nashville and across Kentucky and Tennessee heavy wind rain and electrical storms caused extensive damage to crops buildings and highways. Two deaths were reported including deputy sheriff John O Lewis and 9 year old Lois Dawkins. Flooding broad, towns like Alexandria and Manchester suffered severe inundation and roads were impassable in the bluegrass region.
A tornado near Johnstown Colorado killed four people and caused heavy damage to farms and homes. Susan McLaughlin 50 died of fright after being sheltered in a physician's office. A Mexican family lost three members and the McLaughlin home roof was ripped off. Andrew Morris was injured with two broken ribs as wires and telephone poles were toppled.
Isa M. Taylor of Clarksburg West Virginia was elected third vice president of Quota Clubs International at the annual Davenport convention. Elizabeth J. White of New Castle Pennsylvania was named president with Catherine Olney Worcester Massachusetts as second vice president and Bertha V. Perry Denver Colorado and Juliette Southard New York as directors. The organization recommended permanent headquarters in Washington DC.
Towanda reports Senator J Thomas Heflin of Alabama says Governor Alfred E Smith's Democratic nomination is a mistake and that Smith will be defeated in November. Heflin spoke here after a speaking engagement last night.
Bishop James Cannon Jr and A J Barton announce a July conference in Asheville North Carolina to mobilize dry Democrats for electing prohibition aligned candidates and defeating Governor Alfred E Smith for president. They label Smith a foe of the Eighteenth Amendment and Volstead Act and pledge party unity.
Frank McReynolds a 24 year old truck driver for Cole Baking of Welch was badly hurt when his truck fell 40 feet off an embankment about a mile from Bartley. He is at Grace hospital Welch with base of skull fracture a crushed pelvis and severe shock. His mother Mrs Mary McReynolds and sisters rushed to his bedside after learning of the accident which occurred about 430 pm as he returned to Welch.
Paris June 2 Raymond Poincare’s government survived a fierce assault as the Chamber of Deputies backed the cabinet 456 to 126. The session adjourns for summer. reconvenes in October with opposition subdued. The radical left and socialists faced off in earlier votes.
National prohibition leaders at a Houston conference push for a third party joining farmers and drys with a July 10 Chicago convention planned by D. Harger. Southern Democratic drys deny shifting from the party while Senator Heflin of Alabama and Cone Johnson of Texas resist.
Washington reports Secretary Hoover spends time at home drafting his acceptance speech while monitoring Democratic convention radio broadcasts. Secretaries Work and numerous callers discuss campaign matters, with support promised from Senator Goff and others. Work plans to visit President Coolidge in Wisconsin after leaving Washington.
In Houston on June 2 a reception for Mrs Alfred B Smith Mrs Woodrow Wilson and Mrs Joseph T Robinson followed final adjournment at Sam Houston hall. They shared cordial remarks and mutual compliments highlighting their roles and honor in the convention.
The Democratic campaign plans are outlined with two strong candidates Smith and Robinson to lead aggressive stumping and radio campaigns. Shaver's successor as national chair is open with several names discussed. Notification ceremonies target Albany for Smith and Little Rock for Robinson, while Hoover favors a radio centered August start.
Huntington W Va June 29 UP W H Coleman of Spencer Noane county road engineer was elected president of the West Virginia Road Builders association at its organization meeting. Howard A Levering of Cereda named secretary and Julius K Monroe of Greenbrier county was chosen vice president and treasurer. Other vice presidents were Colonel W J Metlaren of Wetch William Jages of Phillopl and Maul Hiundon of Keyser. Directors chosen included Kelly Reed South Charleston EB H Cordord Charleston T H Nash Huntington G R K Claypool Logan Harry McGraw Wellsboro T F Holz bore Erin Kelley Parkershoro and I F Morris Morgantown. A banquet closed the first day with remarks by state road commissioner Harvey Marsh and N Connor of New York executive engineer of the American Road Builders association. Business sessions resume tomorrow.
Albany June 29 Governor Smith reiterates he will complete his term in the state capital despite rumors he might resign after his formal nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate He says he will stay on until the last day of his term and resigning would forfeit a life pension of 6500 a year.
Senator T. J. Walsh of Montana commends Governor Smith as the striking figure of the political stage since Roosevelt. Walsh, who briefly sought the presidency, plans to campaign for Smith and other party leaders. He notes Smith’s popularity across society and asserts Smith would prioritize the man over money and enforce the eighteenth amendment honestly if elected.
The new Democratic national committee meets after the convention and plans a formal organization at the Democratic Club in New York City on July 11. George Gordon Battle speaks briefly as the committee hears no further business besides pending contest issues involving Oregon and Oswald West.
Results from about half to three quarters of North Dakota precincts indicate drys celebrate as Shafer leads Thoresen for governor and Frazier appears to win the Senate race over Newtons. Early figures show Shafer ahead by around 15 000 with Frazier leading Nestor.
An infuriated mob forced entry into the Lincoln County jail at Brookhaven Mississippi and seized two prisoners charged with assaulting local white citizens. The men were lynched by the mob in the town.
H Atkins convicted in Mercer county court and sentenced to five years in the state penitentiary was granted a writ of error today by Judge M O Lata of the state supreme court.
A Arkansas solon secures support from the entire WU9 as he hopes to gain ballots from Curtis. He calls Smith a magnetic figure who justified confidence, noting his absence at the time he won nomination as the convention adjourns.
James L Williams reports Joseph T. Robinson of Arkansas is the Democratic vice presidential pick at the convention for Governor Alfred E. Smith. Robinson secured an overwhelming 108 1 2 votes, with Henry T. Allen remaining a distant second.
