Matewan West Virginia July 29 Special By a ruling of the Pike county Kentucky court last Saturday afternoon blackberry district which has been the center of a great fight between the drys and the wets was declared to be dry territory. This ends perhaps the greatest battle ever waged between the two forces in either state. The decision met with approval of the people of bordering West Virginia county of Mingo. This eliminates any wet territory between Pocahontas Virginia and Catlettsburg Kentucky and now will enable the two states to cooperate in enforcing the laws after July 1. Many liquor dealers who anticipated licenses to sell whiskey had stored away several thousand gallons on the Kentucky side and are now tasked with getting it back into West Virginia and shipping it out of the state before the dry law goes into effect or hauling it fifteen miles over mountainous roads to the nearest station. Officers along the border declare strict vigilance and any attempt to poach will receive prompt attention.

Lewisburg West Virginia June 29 Carl Hoke was killed and his father Theodore Hoke fatally wounded in a lengthy battle five miles from Hart's Run. Sheriff Lincoln Cochran and deputy George Sparks were seriously hurt. The Hokes, once convicted in Greenbrier County of railroad car robbery, had escaped jail and were located last week as the circuit court pressed for their arrest. The men fought from a canyon in the wilderness until both were down. Jessie Hoke with them escaped.
