Mine Fire Takes Toll in Centralia Health and Hope
In Centralia Pennsylvania a new hot spot but residents say the emotional toll is worse. A May 19 referendum shows 434 to 204 backing town relocation to extinguish the fire, but government action remains unclear while federal and state officials dispute responsibilities. A 1,400 degree reading near town raises fear. Residents accuse Interior Department of ignoring the issue and criticize federal buyout offers as inadequate. The mine fire since 1962 has produced gases and dangerous tunneling, with a 12-year-old narrowly saved in a 1962 cave-in and a former mayor fainting from fumes in March.
