TVA Spends Big As Heat Drives Up Power Costs
TVA reports biannual surge in electricity costs due to heat boosting outside purchases. Two hot days added about 2 million dollars to generating costs, with 500 thousand potentially saved by higher thermostat settings. TVA officials note 9 percent of peak hour power from neighbors and 8 percent from oil turbines, versus coal and nuclear. Chairman Freeman urges turning up thermostats to save 47 million dollars. Peak demand hit 20.5 million kilowatts amid valley temperatures, while hydro generation is kept steady to protect lake levels and summer recreation.
