The Star Spangled Banner and the Flag’s History

The flag’s design evolved after Congress approved a national banner with Betsy Ross among makers. It gained 15 stars and stripes at additions of Kentucky and Vermont, then 13 stripes and one star per state in 1818. Francis Scott Key penned a poem after Fort McHenry, inspiring the anthem. The flag now rests in the Smithsonian.
