InfiNet, a seven year old Norfolk based Internet service provider, says it is quitting as an ISP and laying off about 89 workers, roughly half its staff. The company will transfer its nearly 100,000 dial up customers to EarthLink of Atlanta, with terms undisclosed. InfiNet will concentrate on its remaining business interests.
The firm specializes in providing web site services to more than 200 newspapers across the country, expanding digital offerings and online platforms for a broad media network. The initiative supports digital presence, ad sales, and audience reach for regional presses.
The Justice Department sues to block the 129 billion WorldCom and Sprint proposed merger, arguing it would raise prices for millions of customers and reduce competition. WorldCom and Sprint withdrew their EU merger notification but deny abandoning the deal.

The Town of Bluefield Virginia will combine the July 3 Monday garbage run with the June 30 Friday pickup and merge the July 4 Tuesday recycling with July 5 garbage on Wednesday. Regular Monday and Tuesday customers should note the changes and plan accordingly.
