Elderhostel trek brings Texas veteran back to Concord College
Ellis Earle, 61, traveled from Gun Barrel City Texas to Concord College for an Elderhostel week of non credit courses in Civil War biology and the symphony. The West Virginia trip stirred nostalgia for his 1943 soldier days at the academy and the old gym White Hall and the Sweet Shop. He recalls Army Air Corps training here with 220 cadets in a Civilian Training Detachment and later became an engineer and B 17 gunner. This year’s program hosts participants from multiple states and offers on campus lodging, park visits, and drama excursions.
