Hilltopper service fears spark Mercer County apathy

Mercer County residents face a Friday Interstate Commerce Commission hearing on Hilltopper service with County Commissioner Luther Byrd noting weak turnout compared to Amtrak advocacy in the past. U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall plans to attend the 9 a.m. session to press for continuing the line as local groups mobilize and officials urge support. The notice comes amid school warnings after a fire marshal order and brief busy signals at the Central Office. The Governor’s Summer Youth Program reports about 160 youths participating in Mercer County projects. The county court will close for two weeks in July for staff vacations.
