Rockefeller backs Fortas as chief justice pick
Nelson Rockefeller defended President Johnson's choice of Abe Fortas as chief justice, calling him a brilliant lawyer. He spoke during a three day Midwest campaign swing and criticized Republican critics including Richard Nixon for opposing the appointment. He argued the president has a constitutional responsibility to appoint, and Fortas is well qualified for the role.
