Three inmates armed with zip guns and a homemade bomb fired on guards at Western State Penitentiary in Pittsburgh. A prisoner named Richard Mayberry lost part of a hand when the bomb exploded. he was the only reported injury. Guards responded with tear gas and a hospital assault team, recapturing the suspects after a roughly one hour standoff.

Two people were injured and about $1900 in damages resulted when Estel Tabor's car collided with a parked truck on Bluefield Avenue near the Virginia line after 5 p.m. Mrs Eunice Brinkley was admitted to Bluefield Sanitarium with aabrasions to the right leg. Tabor had a left hand injury and was cited for failure to have his vehicle under control. Officer Bill Bailey investigated.
