Pelican hit by car may have been intoxicated by toxin
A California brown pelican crashed through a motorist’s windshield on the Pacific Coast Highway. Wildlife officials suspect domoic acid poisoning from ocean algae caused odd behavior. The driver was uninjured. The pelican required surgery for a broken foot and a pouch wound.

Deluge floods Washington area closes federal sites
More than a foot of rain drenched the Northeast washing out highways around the capital. A 100 year old elm toppled on the White House lawn. Flooding closed major government departments and the National Archives where the Declaration of Independence is kept. McDowell County indictments outline sex crimes cases
A McDowell County man, Jody Dewayne Dobbs, 30, Bartley, faces 136 counts of sexual assault and abuse by a custodian, alleged to involve two children under 11 between 2002 and 2005. Antoine L. Edwards, 25, Welch, is charged with one count of first degree sexual abuse, and Glen David Wheeler, 55, is also indicted in an unrelated case.

Expansion brings 30 new jobs to Bland County Virginia
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced a 3 million expansion by ABB in Bland County creating 30 new jobs. ABB will extend its plant that makes dry and vacuum cast transformers used by industrial plants hospitals universities and the military. The project helped Virginia beat competing bids from China South Korea and Spain. A second expansion at the Halifax facility adds to 157 total new jobs.

Region's eyes on water as storms threaten floods
Forecasters warned West Virginia and Virginia residents of heavy rain and flood conditions today. West Virginia remains under a flood watch until 10:15 p.m, Virginia until 6 p.m. NWS meteorologist Alan Rezek says most WV counties have already seen two or more inches of rain in recent days.
