Four wounded in disturbance at state prison

At the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville guards fired on knife wielding inmates during a 2:20 p.m. disturbance in North Hall. Four prisoners were wounded, one severely, after inmates refused orders and opened cell doors.

Piedmont Commuter adds plane to Bluefield Beckley flights

Due to heavy bookings at Mercer and Raleigh, Piedmont Commuter will add another airplane to Charlotte to Bluefield and Beckley routes starting next month. Beckley travelers report being bumped as Bluefield runs full, with four of five daily flights to Charlotte remaining nonstop on July 1.

Baliles Sets Sept 15 For Road Session

Governor Gerald Baliles announced September 15 as the opening date for a special General Assembly session to consider Virginia roadbuilding needs. He met with Sen. Edward Willey at Stuart Circle Hospital where Willey is recovering from a stroke. The Transportation Commission reported no constitutional bond issues for road funding, but did not address splitting the Highway Trust Fund for maintenance and construction.

Y Center reopening proposal heads to YWCA vote

A plan to reopen Bluefield's Y Center as a community recreation hub will be presented to YWCA members for a vote. Mirt Corte of the Bluefield chamber led the push with Mayor Paul Cole and Ed Freakley, after a meeting with YWCA directors.

West Virginia Supreme Court upholds school closures in McDowell case

The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals overturned a McDowell County Circuit Court injunction that blocked three school closures. It ruled the county board complied with rules then in effect and noted the State Board of Education approved the closures starting in 1985 86 after additional information from the county.
