Comet Giacobini Zinner dust tail alarms ICE encounter
NASA scientist warns a newly developed dust tail from Comet Giacobini Zinner could damage the International Cometary Explorer on its Sept. 11 flyby of the comet. ICE aims to study the tail’s physics and later observe Halley’s comet. The mission uses ISEE-3’s recycled craft, launched in 1978, with a planned multiple-vehicle study of comet tails.
