Columbia Hit By Heavy Storm Before Final Test Flight
CAPE CANAVERAL AP A severe thunderstorm soaked the space shuttle Columbia injuring some heat resistant tiles on the rudder and body flaps. Officials maintained optimism for a Sunday 11 a.m. EDT liftoff as engineers assessed the damage and prepared to inspect the damaged areas. Astronauts Ken Mattingly and Hank Hartsfield slept through the damage review while congressmen, weather officers, and NASA officials weighed the risk and timing for what could become a historically punctual launch.
