Appalachia Growth Seen From Livestock and Timber

Secretary Freeman told the Senate Public Works Committee Appalachia could raise up to 2 billion yearly by boosting livestock and timber output. By 1972 pasture improvements could add 230 million in farmer income, while timber development would increase regional earnings. West Virginia Governor Barron cited reduced unemployment as evidence the program would accelerate progress. House subcommittee leaders expect early action, with executive session after the GOP convention. Senator Clark cautioned the problems run deep, but supported the 4.2 billion regional overhaul program as a start.
