Tobacco carryover restrictions and 1983 farm reports issued
Emmett Basham announces that starting with the 1983 crops marketing agents will not process or store producer carryover tobacco under barley and flue cured programs. The carryover was halted in 1979 after earlier runs from 1972 to 1978. Excess tobacco is above 110 percent of the farm quota. The program was briefly reinstated for 1982 to store excess tobacco but is deemed not in producers best interests due to higher leasing costs and misidentification issues. Farmers must report 1983 planted acres to ASCS by July 15 and may request measurement services for a fee to ensure accuracy with aerial verification.
