Lightning Storm Sparks 840 Wildfires in California
Del Walters of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection notes that the day brought mostly sunny skies and a sudden lightning storm that produced over 840 wildfires. He says the storm was unpredicted and lacks climate history as it neared the shore. Public weather calm winds were noted with highs near 86.

Goff repay: five gallon gas debt finally settled
In Southington Ohio Violet and Harold Goff were repaid for a gas loan from 1974. A now adult Jeffrey Hardin returned with a plastic five gallon container of gas. Goff recalls the teen owed him the same amount and says the debt became a small personal investment as the value rose from about five dollars to twenty five.

Veteran Mercer employee named Mercer County Clerk interim
Verlin Moye, a veteran employee of the assessor and mapping offices, was appointed Tuesday as the new interim Mercer County Clerk. He was sworn in by Circuit Court Judge Derek C. Swope and will take the post July 1 as Rudolph Jennings retires June 30. The county commission seeks election procedure review and supporters express confidence in Moye.
