In August 1914 a Glen Alum payroll robbery and murders triggered a massive regional hunt. About $7,000 was taken by masked gunmen who ambushed a rail hand car crew, killing a company doctor, the payroll clerk, and a guard. A 500-strong posse scoured Mingo and McDowell counties, pursuing five robbers who barricaded in Pen Creek’s hills, exchanging fire for days. The fugitives were never identified.
