City residency rule in Bluefield faces legality review
Bluefield city residency mandate for new police and fire hires and other city workers was suspended while the board seeks an opinion on its legality. Fraternal Order of Police representative Ted Jones urged change after similar ordinances in Huntington and Charleston were ruled unconstitutional. Six officers have been hired under the rule, creating housing hardships for some and potential loss for one who may have to sell his home as the measure is paused. The board’s action followed concerns from city officials about the ordinance's future viability.
