Mine inspections and citations raise questions after fatal incident
Under federal rules the mine must be inspected at least every five days with a quarterly comprehensive review. In 1983, through May, 181 inspections yielded 128 citations, none of which led to major violations or closure. MSHA inspector Gerald Slace expressed concern but said he did his best, stressing no one is perfect.

Medicare Surplus Seen Then Deficit in 50 Years
Trustees project Medicare funded old age and disability programs will run surpluses for the next 50 years but begin to fall short after 2033. They estimate a 2 percent payroll tax would be needed in the final 25 years to cover growing costs as benefits rise and trust fund reserves shrink.

UMW backs acid rain bill in cautious show of support
The International Executive Board of the United Mine Workers wrapped up a two day meeting in Marion Illinois with a tentative backing of a compromise acid rain control bill in Congress. Lobbyists said they would not take an official stand until the bill is seen. UMW lobbyist Gerald Hawkins praised the House measure for spreading costs and protecting coal miners jobs. The bill would require a 10 million ton reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions funded by a residential electric bill surcharge. Critics warned regional electric bills could rise and coal interests suffer. President Rich Trumka returned to Virginia after a mine disaster and a federal probe began, with a fundraiser planned in DuQuoin to aid unemployed miners.
