Market Ends Erratic Week
New York stocks closed with little change after an erratic week as drug and airline shares provided some lift. The Dow slipped 0.10 to 1,241.69 while the Dow Jones transportation average rose 8.68 to 589.29 led by Delta, AMR, UAL, Eastern, Trans World, and Pan Am. Volume on the NYSE totaled 80.81 million shares amid concerns over the federal budget deficit and Fed policy. The money stock grew about 13 percent annual rate, and long term bonds fell slightly as rates edged higher. The market paused after a recent run to record highs with mixed breadth on the Big Board.
