Harlan Kentucky, June 24. Humes Johnson, 19, was shot to death on Main Street as he stood between two men firing from a car and a curbside observer. Charley Gurley, 40, miner, was conversing nearby when the shooting occurred. Gurley says he knows the car shooter who likely aimed at Gurley, not the youth. Deputies search for the gunman, who previously killed Gurley’s brother Otha in 1925 and was wounded by another brother Virgil Gurley.

Charleston June 24. Appointment of fifty five county boards of education to put the new county unit school law into effect was announced by W. W. Trent superintendent of schools. The 275 board members include E A Leonard D M Easley W B McNutt Dr B Clements and Donzie Lilly composing Mercer board with Gracie White L B Lyons Roy Sutphin and Rice Cook named from various counties as the first slate to take office July 1 and serve until the 1934 general election. Trent urged support for the boards noting the task and responsibility and forecast a long transition toward equal opportunities in education. An attack on the constitutionality of the county unit law is pending in Kanawha county court.
Twelve skeletal remains unearthed near a suspected Blackbeard lair in Norfolk suggest a long buried grave site. The bones, varying in size, hint at both adults and children, with nearby Lake Joyce island tied to the pirate lore.
