West Virginia sheriffs provide weapons and cars to deputies
In Mercer County and nearby counties in southern West Virginia, officials report a shift from deputies supplying their own weapons and vehicles to a system where the county furnishes standard issue 9 mm Glock pistols and relatively new cruisers. Some counties, like Monroe, still require officers to supply guns, while others have funding for radios and gear.

Tazewell approves 1998 99 budget amid shortfall
Tazewell County Board of Supervisors approved a 1998 99 budget totaling 73 595 641 with a suspected end of year shortfall of about 300 000. The school fund receives 10 701 744 local dollars but faces controversy as it is over 1 million less than the school board request. The extra 100 000 hoped by the school board remains unapproved, pending county surplus figures after the July 12 audit, and appropriations will be issued semi annually to control spending.
