Court allows hold of dangerous sex predators beyond terms

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that sexually violent predators can be confined after completing their sentences if deemed dangerous, with states like Kansas allowed to use terms other than mentally ill to justify continued confinement. The decision upheld due process standards and noted confinement aims to protect society rather than punish. Justice Thomas emphasized narrow, properly conducted confinement for especially dangerous individuals. Five states have similar laws to Kansas.
