Shalala criticizes GOP governors for bipartisanship collapse
Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala urged Republican governors to stand firm on a bipartisan welfare plan acceptable to President Clinton. She blamed NGA leaders for letting the bipartisan welfare and Medicaid proposal crumble, while urging continued Medicaid support after welfare time limits, job training funds, and child protection vouchers. Gov. Bob Miller of Nevada echoed fault lies with congressional leaders, leaving hope for reform if the plan is separated from a Medicaid overhaul. The issue looms ahead of the NGA summer meeting in Puerto Rico.
