Charleston West Virginia June 23 The state senate refused to confirm Governor Meadows nomination for superintendent of the West Virginia colored children’s home at Huntington but approved 30 other appointments. Names include N H Dyer Dell White R M Knotts Don McClaugherty Merriman S Smith A W Locke E B Pennebaker Ira E Briers and Grace P Lockard with other totals and terms noted.
Searchers recovered two bodies from the smoking hulk of the SS Markay after a massive explosion and fire in Los Angeles harbor. Named victims Harold C. Link and William Nelson Walters were identified by Chief Engineer Jack Sims, with nine others still missing amidships. Officials planned a major disaster board investigation as crews describe internal detonation and ship separation.

Washington June 23 final passage of the Taft Hartley bill makes it law that unions may be sued by employers for breach of contract and damages in jurisdictional strikes and secondary boycotts. It requires collective bargaining with employers and restricts forcing universal union membership while allowing agreements on dues in some cases. Foremen and supervisors may not bargain, and workers may not be compelled to deduct union dues. Officers who are Communist or active sympathizers lose Wagner Act rights.
