National Forests In State Could Be Affected By Ruling

An Interior Department study for the court settlement with the National Wildlife Federation says Reagan administration changes to strip mining rules could open 270000 acres of West Virginia national forest to mining, with up to 1 million more acres in Appalachia. The plan would broaden rights for developers in forests and wildlife refuges and loosen environmental protections though most environmental impact would be minor. Public comment is invited for 60 days on the proposal and 27 rule changes.
