Reagan Weighs Dropping MX If Soviets Halt ICBMs
The Reagan administration will consider scrapping the MX missile if the Soviet Union agrees to forgo its own new intercontinental weapons. Kenneth L. Adelman told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee the MX is the U.S. response to a massive Soviet buildup and the U.S. would proceed only if Moscow reverses its buildup and abandons heavy and medium ICBMs. The testimony was released as the panel opened hearings on halting the arms race and was described by Sen. Charles H. Percy as indicating a potential fair trade for the MX.
