The new federal highway bill set to take effect July 1 raises West Virginia road funding to about 20 million dollars annually, with a 50 50 match for primary secondary and urban roads and a 1 matching share for interstate highways. Current year funds total about 9.7 million, rising to 29.6 million in the next year as old and new provisions mix.

Bernard F Lawrence 70 of 1327 East Essex Street Bluefield died last night around 7 pm at Bluefield Sanitarium after a long illness. He had recently arrived at the Sanitarium for treatment. He was formerly employed by Westinghouse Electric Company.

In Rossville Georgia a sinkhole opened under Willie Morrison's backyard as he worked at a woolen mill. A 25 foot diameter hole collapsed to equal depth revealing an underground water filled cave. Neighbors reported dust and shifting bushes while the area, once a limestone mining site, raises concerns of an underground lake.
The appeal of William Big Bill Lias, West Virginia coin machine vendor, against a government claim for about 24 million dollars in income taxes will be argued in the U S Fourth Circuit at Asheville. Lias wife is a petitioner in one of two consolidated suits. Earlier in this session a separate appeal of Lias automatic coin vending machine company was decided, affirming the tax court.

Mary Peggy Lawson 16 of Bluefield-Tazewell Road died and was laid to rest today at Willow Chapel in Wittens Mill with Rev. Clark officiating and burial in Maplewood Cemetery.

West Virginia political veteran Cousin Abe Lilly dies in Charleston after a life of public service. He ran for governor in 1916 narrowly losing, sought the U S Senate in 1922, and served as a presidential elector for Taft in 1908. Mrs Effie Belcher 28 of Fort Pierce Florida died in a single car crash on Route 21 four miles south of Speedwell Wytheville hospital. Her husband Ira 37 and their baby Bobby Lee were hospitalized in critical and non serious conditions respectively. The Oldsmobile hit an embankment in misty rain as the family headed north to relatives in Mulens.
In Tampa, Edgar Barbee testified a taxi was stolen by Walter C. Davidson who then forced him to run beside the cab at pistol point for several blocks, only to reveal the gun was a cap pistol. Davidson pleaded guilty to automobile theft and received a deferred sentence.
