General Relief Load Declines In State
Charleston W Va June 21 Stabilization in employment caused a decline in the public assistance department general relief load last month for the first drop this year Director Robert F Roth said today. Cases dropped from 5842 on May 1 to 5525 on June 1 but classified aid showed a gradual increase due chiefly to the let down in the ability of ex servicemen to continue aid in the affected families and temporary unemployment incident to the shift from war to peacetime conditions. On June 1 the department had a total of 32992 cases against 33068 on May 1 and 30913 on January 1 when the total began to climb. Old age assistance cases increased from 18669 on May 1 to 18792 aid to the blind 824 to 830 and aid to dependent children from 7733 to 7845 cases Roth said these increases are about in stride with the shifting conditions in business and industry.
