Mercer group advances Build a Lake plan for Mercer County
Princeton Mercer County Chamber of Commerce endorses the Build a Lake concept linking Rock and Lake Shawnee along the Bluestone River. The project spans over six miles, about 500 acres, and 70 000 feet of shoreline, promising lakefront homes and tourism to boost economic development. About 99 percent support, with a few objectors. A nearly 40 million state lottery grant is sought from a 200 million fund, with July 1 deadline, competing against Wheeling Charleston and Beckley. Residents across Rock Kegley Lashmeet Matoaka and Spanishburg areas back the plan. Some 26 homes would be purchased or relocated. 10 owners would sell if treated properly. Organizers propose lake-side lots and relocation options for current houses.

Virginia death row case may still face execution
Virginia prosecutors and defense lawyers say Darryl Atkins could still be put to death after the US Supreme Court ruling banning executions of the mentally retarded. The case was remanded to the Virginia Supreme Court to decide whether Atkins’ mental retardation should spare him or return to trial. Atkins and co defendant William Jones abducted Airman Eric Nesbitt in 1996 for beer money and killed him during the robbery.

Executives: Mild weather and economy hit coal industry
West Virginia coal layoffs rise as mild weather and a stagnant economy curb demand. Job cuts include 800 at Massey Energy in southern West Virginia and about 190 at Anker Coal Group in Barbour and Upshur counties, with 200 at Peabody Energy in Boone County. Miners at Consol Energy mines face idling and shifting schedules. Bill Raney of the industry group notes the losses were anticipated.

West Virginia flood victims sue coal and timber firms
A class-action suit filed in McDowell Wyoming and Raleigh counties represents 1400 plus flood victims from southern West Virginia. The plaintiffs accuse coal and logging companies of irresponsibly logging mountaintop removal and valley fills, causing the July 8 2001 floods and seeking justice and assurances no similar disaster occurs.
